How Lime Aids CO2 Absorption
Lime plays a crucial role in CO2 absorption due to the lime cycle, one of nature’s best-known examples of chemistry. The term “lime” refers to products derived from burnt (calcined) limestone, such as quicklime (calcium oxide) and hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide). Limestone, a naturally occurring sedimentary rock, consists of high levels of calcium and/or magnesium carbonate. When limestone or chalk (calcium carbonate) is burnt in a kiln, it turns into quicklime and releases carbon dioxide.
Adding water to quicklime produces hydrated lime. This unique ability of processed limestone products to return to their original chemical form is key to their effectiveness. In the lime cycle, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or industrial processes reacts with hydrated lime, converting it back to limestone.
